Subject: My Grandfather's "Russian" Birth Record

This is my grandfather's birth record. He was born in 1890 in Garbas, and was baptized in the Bakalarzewo parish.

There is only two things I need to know from this record. One is the occupation of Kazimierz Szwarc at the time of Franciszek's birth. I have been told the document states he was in the military reserves, but that he had a job, while living in the village of Garbas. I would very much like to know what his occupation was.

The other thing I would like to know is the name of Franciszek's Godmother. I have been told this says his Godfather was Wojciech Przemielewski. It is thought that the Godmother was Rozalia Przemielewski. I would like to have her first name verified.

I hope someone can read this for me. I would appreicate knowing these two items very much.

Thank you,
Tina Ellis

Hi, Here is the marriage record, from St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church in Chicago IL. I am curious about the place where the groom, Franciszek Kwiatkowski, was born. To me it looks like this says "Podjaszcz ks. Poz."?

Attached is a copy of the ships original manifest for the Lokaj family passage from Antwerp to New York on or around November 7, 1907. According to the ships manifest, Tomasz traveled with his wife Sophie and their two sons Josef and Tadeuz. The family's ultimate destination was Kingmound West Virginia USA. According to the manifest, Tomasz' place of birth was Potoczek Russia and their last place of residence also appears to be Potoczek Russia. Other U.S. documents list the villages and towns of Pillgard Russia, Kreson Poland, Potache Poland and Potoceik Russia as places of residence and births. The only valid village/town found thus far has been Potoczek and their are a few of them. Some of the other U.S. documents mention that Tomasz had come from the Ukraine. Can anyone help me identify the correct "Potoczek" and give me the name of either the Roman Catholic or Polish National church for that village?

Photo from Leonard (21.01.2004)

Thanks for the reply to try to sort out what would be the correct last name. I have attached the picture of my grandfather’s niece and also the message she wrote on the back. I’m not sure where the lady lived when she sent the picture but grandfather lived near Kacznowo, not far from Wrzesna when he left Poland to come to Manitoba, Canada in 1906.

Thanks Leonard

Re: Szczepan - Stefan - Stiepan / Stepan / Stiopa (Styopa)

so, if Szczepan is Stefan - the Russian equivalents are:
STIEPAN - surname going from this name could be Stiepanowicz
cyrillic! - СТЕПАН, СТЕПАНОВИЧ,СТЕПА

Stepan
Stiopa / Styopa
but it could be much better to wait for our friends opinion from for example Ukraine forum (Hanna - greetings!).

Re: Stiepan Stepan Stiopa (Styopa) - in Cyrillic ? At Forum? - why not ?

Hi Norbert!
Hi Sue and Pat!

I wonder nothing is immpossible on this Forum with all of us (let's do hope)!! So to have for example all names searched by Norbert in cyrillic alphabet I want to propose to "use" for the first time our 2003 Christmas gift for all - "PGF Searching Room" in our (fully nonprofit) family memories internet gallery GA.PA -
hmmm..., paradoxically not in Polish language but in Russian (why not, world is small and common), so in 12 hours (sorry but I'am in home now and deep night is coming) you will see it in this special internet "site":

http://www.narodowa.pl/pgfsearchingroom/

like first point in this "room".

Dear all Forum,
we would be happy when this additional PGF searching tool, this "new internet searching site", will be useful for all of you in 2004 and in next years with checking all family documents in Polish language (it turned out that with the others also)!

brgds,
tadeusz :)
